The Laird Norton Family Foundation supports projects that address clean water and sanitation,through access, technology, and policy as a pivotal first step to improving health, education, economic welfare and quality of life in developing countries.
The Foundation strongly believes in the vision that all communities deserve to have basic needs met and opportunities to thrive.
Focus Areas
- Developing water and sanitation resources, such as wells and springs
- Supporting point-of-use and treatment technology (filters, etc.)
- Educating people on the impacts of government policy and policy proposals, enforcing laws, and increasing awareness of water and sanitation issues.
- Capacity building grants to foster collaboration and the sharing of best practices in the field
- Supports innovative projects with strategies for long-term sustainability.
Focus Countries
The foundation primarily award grants to U.S.-based organizations with a strong international presence, with the majority of funded projects located in Africa, Central America, and Asia.
Types of Support
- The Foundation generally provides program or operating support, with approximately 30% of grant dollars awarded from 2007-13 designated as general operating support.
- The Foundation makes grants to organizations located within the United States qualified under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) and classified as public charities (not private foundations) under Section 509(a).
Application process
- The Laird Norton Family Foundation awards grants by invitation only.
- The foundation does not accept unsolicited applications for grants, though they do accept brief inquiries from organizations whose work is closely aligned with our priorities.
- If the applicants believe that their organization is a strong fit with the foundation funding priorities, they may submit an inquiry form.
