The Food & Business Global Challenges Programme is currently open for organizations in Low or Middle-Income Country. Letters of Intent are invited by Netherland Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) for the two types of research projects stated below. Teams of researchers and other public or private partners from Low or Middle Income Country are invited to submit proposals.
The programme aims to encourage scientific research and innovation projects on food security and related private sector development that contribute to long-term access to affordable, safe and nutritious food for vulnerable and resource-poor populations in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).
Within this call, funding is available for two types of research projects:
- Integrated Projects (duration 4 years) and
- Fast Track Research (duration 2-3 years).
Priority Areas
Two priority areas for research and innovation on Transformation of food systems with a focus on sustainability and urbanization have been identified for this call:
- Sustainable Food Systems;
- Urbanization and Challenges for Food and Nutrition Security.
Key Dates
- 16 July 2015-Preliminary IP applications and final FTR applications deadline.
- 23 June 2015-FTR proposals & Letter of Intent sending deadline.
Funding & Benefits
- A maximum of 600,000 euro can be applied for per Integrated Project (IP), with a duration of four years.
- A maximum of 250,000 euro can be applied for per Fast Track Research project (FTR), with a duration of two to three years.
- Other reimbursable costs include:
- Personnel costs of PhD, post-doc, junior and/or senior researchers and other staff (not-for profit);
- Knowledge, research and innovation costs;
- Knowledge sharing and research uptake costs;
- Overhead
Eligibility Criteria
- Proposals should be submitted by consortia of research organisations and a public and/or private organisation from a Low or Middle-Income Country (LMIC).
- Enterprises are especially encouraged to participate.
- The consortium coordinator (who is the main applicant) should be a senior researcher with a PhD degree employed by a Dutch research institute (partner 1).
- Other consortium members should be at least one senior researcher from an LMIC research organisation (partner 2), and a representative of another (non-academic) public or private organisation from the LMIC involved (partner 3). Partner 3 can be from any public or private organisation that can be seen as an actor or stakeholder in food security. Additional partners from (other) LMIC or high income countries are welcomed and encouraged.
- For both project funding, co-funding from partners of at least 20% of the total project budget is a prerequisite, either in-kind or cash.
