Africa has about 60% of the world’s uncultivated land. Annually, the continent spends USD$150 billion on staple food imports and annually 310 million of its citizenry face starvation. African Youth must take the lead in Agriculture to End Starvation.
Syngenta-Enactus Kenya call the youth to identify the problem behind food insecurity and provide sustainable solution to it by submitting the essay and/or video clip on two different categories – The Business Idea Competition and The Agri-business Messaging Competition.
The Business Idea must
- Focus on selected crop value chains; identify a problem that makes the particular crop’s value chain and contribute to enhanced productivity in the value chain
- Incorporate the use of ICT (information communication technology) to innovatively deliver solutions
- Scalable that can be implemented among a large number of smallholder farmers
- Cost effective
- Contribute to empowerment of smallholder farmers
- Lead to the realization of increased crop yields whilst controlling the amount of waste
- Have a positive impact on the environment while embracing biodiversity
- Have the potential to reduce poverty through both generating wealth in local communities and improving consumer health.
- Propose a sustainable environment friendly solution
- Improve labor safety and welfare of farm workers
The Agri-business Messaging Video Clip must
- Target Youth and prove agriculture as ‘Cool’ career option to them
- Encourage the youth to take lead in liberating Africa from Food Insecurity
- Target to end starvation and bring prosperity in African Continent
