Organizations of all types, including NGOs as well as public, private, and corporate foundations use social media to communicate and network with others. Social media has become a very effective tool in sharing stories about your organization, about the challenges your organization faces, and about the resources you need to make change happen. Using social media effectively, though, requires creating and implementing a concerted strategy so that you are sending the same message.
There are several kinds of social media that people use to share information about their organization including-
- A Website: This is probably the most popular and easiest way to share information to a large audience. Your website should include information such as: your organization’s mission, vision, goals, strategic plan, contact information, current and recently completed projects and programs, a wish list of needed items including costs, grants and funding received, etc. And don’t forget photos and videos that convey stories about your work.
- A blog: Think of a blog as a current diary where you share the programs and projects that your organization is working on. Include how you are partnering with others to make good things happen.
- Twitter: A Twitter account enables you to send updates on upcoming events or milestones to donors and potential donors.
- Facebook: And, a Facebook page shows the world the various activities your organization is involved with and also allows others to provide feedback and support.
Since information posted on social media can be viewed by anyone, it is important that the information of any type (text, photos, videos, etc.) that you provide is current, accurate, and moves readers and viewers to become engaged with your organization.
