The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Centre for the Study of Governance Innovation (GovInn) at the University of Pretoria are accepting applications for a fully-funded, full-time PhD studentship in ‘Transdisciplinary Approaches to Wildlife Security’ starting in April 2016.
This studentship is part of a collaborative transdisciplinary research project between CSIR and GovInn on alternative approaches to the governance of resources in South Africa and Southern Africa.
The research, which is the first- ever attempt to use such an approach on such a scale, will make use of innovative, transdisciplinary methods. It will involve a variety of local, national and international stakeholders in driving socioeconomic policy and will make practical recommendations for policy innovation and change in South Africa and its region.
Focus Areas
- wildlife crime (with a focus on rhino poaching) as a security challenge
- transdisciplinary science for addressing complex international/regional security problems

Eligibility Criteria
- Eligible nationality: South African
- The studentship will be awarded at the PhD level. The requirements are:
- A relevant Master’s degree in the social sciences.
- At least two years of work experience.
- Good command of English and knowledge of at least one local language.
- Applicant will be required to pass a security clearance.
