The May 18 Memorial Foundation is currently accepting nominations for Gwangju Prize 2015 from the past recipients of the same award (individuals & organizations).
The May 18 Memorial Foundation is a non-profit organization established on August 30, 1994 by the surviving victims of The 1980 Gwangju Democratic Uprising, the victims families, and the citizens of Gwangju. The foundation aims to commemorate as well as continue the spirit and struggle and solidarity of The May 18 Uprising; to contribute to the peaceful reunification of Korea; and to work towards peace and human rights throughout the world.
Individual or an organization that has struggled for or contributed to the improvement and advancement of human rights, democracy and peace in their community and country can be nominated for the award under two categories-
- Gwangju Prize for Human Rights
- Gwangju Prize for Human Rights Special Award (given once in every 2 years)

- Gwangju Prize for Human Rights: Prize money of 50,000 USD, a medal and a certificate.

Eligibility Criteria
For the Prize-
- A person or group who has been struggling for justice and democracy for their community and country regardless of his/her/its nationality is eligible to be nominated for the award.
- Applicant must be nominated by another individual or organization for the prize.
- A person or group eligible for the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights nominated by another individual or organization. An individual cannot nominate him/herself and cannot be nominated by his/her own organization.
For the Nominator-
A Nominator can be
- An individual or an organization that was awarded Yun Sang-won Award* and May 18 Citzen’s Award.
- An individual or an organization that was awarded the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights or the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights Special Award.
- Domestic/international civil society organizations that were requested to nominate the Prize candidate by the May 18 Memorial Foundation.
- An individual or an organization that agrees to the purpose of the Prize.
How to apply?
- Nominators can download the official nomination form, fill it out completely, and send it to the Foundation with supporting documents by email or post.
- Nominators can use the same nomination form for both categories of prizes.
- The nomination form and supporting documents must be submitted either in Korean or English language.
