The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) is calling applications for the IDRC Research Awards 2016. IDRC offers these awards to graduate-level Canadians, permanent residents of Canada, and citizens of developing countries.
Award
Research award recipients will undertake a one-year paid program of research on the topic they have submitted, and will receive hands-on experience in research management, grant administration, and the creation, dissemination, and use of knowledge from an international perspective.
About
IDRC was established by an act of Canada’s parliament in 1970 to help developing countries find solutions to their challenges. The International Development Research Centre Act describes the Centre’s mandate: “to initiate, encourage, support, and conduct research into the problems of the developing regions of the world and into the means for applying and adapting scientific, technical, and other knowledge to the economic and social advancement of those regions.”
Countries subject to approval
IDRC supports research in all developing countries. At this time, however, IDRC does not offer awards for research that involves Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Korea (Democratic People’s Republic of), Somalia, Eastern Europe, or Central Asia.
Candidates proposing field research in the following countries or territories, even if recommended by the evaluators, must go through a further stage of approval within IDRC – Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo Brazzaville, Congo (Democratic Republic of), Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Gabon, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Libya, Mali, Niger, Papua New Guinea, Small Island States [including Comoros, Mauritius, São Tomé and Principe, Seychelles, Timor-Leste and Oceania (Cook Islands, Fiji, Nauru, Kiribati, Palau, Marshall Islands, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tuvalu, Tonga, Vanuatu, Wallis & Futuna)], South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, West Bank and Gaza, and Yemen.
Eligibility Information
Candidate must:
- be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, or a citizen of a developing country
- be currently enrolled at a recognized university at the master’s or doctoral level OR have completed a master’s or doctoral degree at a recognized university. These awards may be part of an academic requirement.
- proposed research must focus on one or more developing countries.
