About The Elton John Aids Foundation:
The Elton John Aids Foundation was started by international musician and songwriter Sir Elton John in 1992 in the United States, then in 1993 in the United Kingdom. The Foundation is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2013.
Its mission:
The mission of the Elton John Aids Foundation is to fund programs that help to alleviate the pain (emotional, financial, or physical) of those living with or at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS.
Its objectives:
The Foundation funds HIV/AIDS related projects and programs that improve HIV/AIDS individual’s quality of life so that they can live a life of dignity and self-determination.

The Foundation funds project worldwide.
Previously funded projects:
- Funded the Riders for Health project that mobilized the health workers of Lesotho, increasing healthcare capacity.
- Supporting the Children Plus program that has 9 centers in 5 regions of the Ukraine where children can be tested for the HIV/AIDS virus; where staff identify foster and adoptive parents of HIV-positive children; and where a training curricula has been developed for use by state teacher training academies.
- Working with Habitat for Humanity in Cambodia providing safe, clean homes for families infected by HIV as well as linking them to life saving services, such as healthcare, education, and employment.

Sir Elton John recently received the Rockefeller Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award and the Harvard School of Public Health AIDS Initiative Leadership Award for his commitment and contribution to the fight against HIV/AIDS.
How to apply for grants: The Elton John Aids Foundation offers several grant funding opportunities:
- Prioritizing Vulnerable Populations:
- Pioneer Grants: focuses on individual populations at higher risk for HIV/AIDS within a country. These are multi-year grants that must meet the following criteria: focus on service delivery, must have a significant impact on the target population, must be scalable to serve a larger number of people, must be innovative, must track changes being made such as access to condoms, HIV testing, treatment programs, etc. Pioneer Grants are only available in the following countries: Cameroon, Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana, India, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Myanmar, Nigeria, Russian Federation, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Pioneer Grant guidelines will be published on the Foundation’s website in January 2014.
- Large Scale and Grass Roots Initiatives:
- These grants focus on regional and global initiatives where an impact can be made where a large population of people are living with or are at risk of HIV.
- Robert Key Memorial Fund: Founded in memory of Robert Key, co-founder of the Elton John AIDS Foundation (U.K.), this fund is open to organizations that demonstrate an immediate and tangible benefit for individuals living with HIV. The organization must operate in one of the Foundation’s 25 program countries. Applications are accepted at any time and can be for one-year or several years. Awards are made up to £10,000 per year.
- These grants focus on regional and global initiatives where an impact can be made where a large population of people are living with or are at risk of HIV.
