The John Ball Zoo (JBZ) Wildlife Conservation Fund is generally granted for education based projects helping communities learn about the wildlife around them. The Fund also supports projects to conserve some lesser known and endangered species. The Fund aims to promote understanding and enjoyment of rare, threatened and endangered animals and their habitats and to support zoological research that will directly benefit captive animal management.
Funding Areas
- Projects to enhance or assist wild animal preservation, native and exotic, threatened and endangered, and their habitat management.
- Projects to enhance or improve captive animal management including environmental design.
- Projects that assist in the development of education programming in concert with the above purposes.

- Reducing Freshwater Turtle Deaths from Fishing Entanglement in India by Developing Alternative Fishing Methods
- Increasing Local Awareness About the Ecological Importance of Gishwati Forest Reserve, Rwanda
- Community Mobilization for Wildlife Rescue-Phase II in India
Eligibility Criteria
- The principal investigator must be associated with a recognized institution (accredited zoo, academic institution, conservation or non-profit organization).
- All research involving live animals must adhere to regulations listed under the USDA Animal Welfare Act and any appropriate sections of professional ethics or mandatory standards of the American Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
- Applicants must commit to make the information gained from the project available to public.
- Applicants must commit to submit final report by 1 June of the following year and to acknowledge JBZ Wildlife Conservation Fund as sponsor in any printed materials produced as a result of the project.
- Applications for exhibit development/graphics for zoos or facilities in North America will not be considered.
- Proposal must be submitted in English, utilizing 1 inch margins and 12 point font.
- All parts of the application must be completed.
- Photos must be submitted in .jpeg format and attachments scanned and saved in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or Adobe Acrobat. Total attachment can be maximum 1MB. Maximum four photos can be submitted.
Application must include budget and must be accompanied with curriculum vitae of the Principal Investigator(s), letters of support or recommendation from the Principal Investigator’s sponsoring institution, additional letters of support from individuals associated with a recognized institution (not more than two).
Note: Applications must be submitted via email by the deadline. Awards will be made early May 2015.
