The guide entitled, ‘A Guide to Fundraising,’ is a comprehensive document, describing the processes related to creating, presenting and funding projects. The guide has been written by Ernest Hayes, Fadumo Alin, and Lia van Ginneken. The guide was first published in 2004, with its 3rd edition published in Amsterdam in 2008. The guide is beneficial for the NGOs as it provides them with practical guidance that helps them become more professional, create new projects, and gain access to funding for these projects.
The guide has been developed specifically keeping in mind the non-profit organizations in the South. Though the local NGOs are becoming more organized, yet they need to develop more professionalism in order to be recognized on a wider scale. The guide that is based on fundraising checklists developed by Ernie Hayes provides instructions to these local NGOs to make them more competent and professional.
The guide clearly highlights the importance of consistent work that has to be executed by the board as well as the staff members of the NGOs; it is their untiring effort that can ultimately help them in raising funds. The guide warns them against taking shortcuts, stating that the only way to raise sufficient and sustainable funds is through diligence of all the people working in and for the NGO. The guide also extols the benefits of united efforts of community based groups. The guide is broadly divided into 3 sections: the process of professionalism, the planning of a project and finding money for the project.
