Deadline: 8 September 2014
The British Ecological Society (BES) invites individual ecological researchers around the globe to apply for grants to conduct the research work. The primary objectives of the grant program are to fund new and innovative ecological research; pump priming projects; and help early career ecologists to establish an independent research career in ecology.
The BES members (from anywhere in the world) focusing on ecological science research projects (anywhere in the world) with limited alternative sources of funding are encouraged to apply for the grant support. Grant request can be made for both Small and large projects.
Funding Categories
- Small Grants – up to £5,000 for ecological research projects carried out by the student researchers.
- Large Grants – In between up to £5,000 to up to £20,000 for early career ecologists. In the absence of extenuating circumstances, ‘early career’ is defined as less than 5 years post- Ph.D. or -D.Phil. experience.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants can be only individuals, not organizations; and only to the BES members. Large grants are limited to ecologists at an early stage in their career.
- Applicants cannot use a Research Grant to fund a component of a larger, already funded study.
- Funding is not available for work that will form part of a degree or thesis.
- Applicants are responsible for obtaining all relevant permits and permissions required to undertake the proposed work
- Applications for projects based outside the UK should demonstrate appropriate liaison with collaborating organizations, local environmental agencies, NGOs and/or communities.
- An individual can receive small grants up to three (3) times in 5-year duration while recipient of large research grants at any time cannot reapply.
- In case of Large grants, the investigator must have a Ph.D. or D.Phil., or have submitted a thesis that will have been examined by the time the application is submitted. The investigator must demonstrate that the project is distinct from other current research activities; should undertake at least part of the research him/herself.
- Funding is not given to individuals who already have full time permanent academic positions in universities or equivalent positions in research institutes.
Note: Applications and reference letters must be submitted via online application system. All applicants must complete part A of the application form. For grants of more than £5,000 there is a two stage application process. Shortlisted applicants will be required to complete part B of the application form. It is recommended to submit the application much earlier than the deadline so that there is enough time for two personal reference statements to be completed online before the application deadline.
