The Fund for Gender Equality is a UN Women grant-making mechanism for economic and political empowerment of women around the world. Innovative and high-impact programs that will bring about concrete changes in the lives of marginalized women including rural women, young women, domestic workers and indigenous women along with their families and communities are supported.
Thematic Areas
- Women’s economic empowerment – to increase women’s access to and control over decision-making, land, technology, credit, livelihoods and other means of production and social protection.
- Women’s political empowerment – to support women in taking on leadership roles and participating more fully in political processes and in all spheres of public life. Young women leaders are also a particular focus.
Priority programs
- Demonstrate a special emphasis on engaging and partnering with marginalized women
- Illustrate the capacity to achieve tangible impact and results in the lives of women and girls
- Emphasize innovation
- Prioritize participatory approaches
The Fund conducts a global, bi-annual grant-making cycle supporting projects. The 2011–2012 grant-making cycle has now been completed. Next call will be announced soon.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be women’s community-based, national or regional non-governmental organizations legally registered in their home country. Eligible organizations have women in the majority of leadership positions and holding a majority representation on the governing board.
- Applications can also be made by local or national governmental entities including (not limited to) ministries of gender equality, finance, labor and justice; human rights and electoral commissions; local governments; and parliamentary caucuses.
- Eligible programs may be led by
- A single women-led non-governmental organization/governmental entity.
- A partnership between one governmental agency and one women-led non-governmental organization (NGO).
- A partnership between two women’s non-governmental agencies (NGOs).
- A partnership between two governmental entities.
- Applications can be made by a consortium of organizations with one lead and/or co-lead organization accountable for project management and contractual obligations.
- Applications can be made for multi-country or regional programs.
- Regional networks proposing a regional program must be legally registered as a women’s non-governmental organization/association in one of the countries of program implementation.
- One organization or consortium can make only one application per grant cycle.
