The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a nonprofit foundation working for the growth and strengthening of democratic institutions around the globe. The NED funds only nongovernmental organizations, which may include civic organizations, associations, independent media, and other similar organizations. It encourages applications from organizations working in diverse environments including newly established democracies, semi-authoritarian countries, highly repressive societies and countries undergoing democratic transitions.
The foundation works in Africa, Asia, Middle East & North Africa, Latin America and Caribbean, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia. The NED is dedicated to fostering the growth of a wide range of democratic institutions abroad, including political parties, trade unions, free markets and business organizations, as well as the many elements of a vibrant civil society that ensure human rights, an independent media, and the rule of law.
