The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Coordination Officer based in Nairobi, Kenya.

Key Job Responsibilities
The Coordination Officer will perform the following functions-
- Provide major inputs for the organizing and convening of the meetings of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR), including its Sub-committees and Working Groups.
- Prepare the background documentation required for all the above meetings and provide inputs to the preparation of the agendas.
- Write the minutes of the CPR meetings, sub-committee meetings and other related meetings.
- Follow up a variety of requests from the Permanent Representatives on issues such as the implementation of United Nations Environmental Assembly (UNEA) decisions and UNEP’s Programme, and advise the Secretary of Governing Bodies on specific follow up actions.
- Prepare replies to Governments, intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental organizations on a variety of issues such as programme areas, procurement costs, and UNEP language requirements among others.
- Develop the documentation for the UNEA Sessions.
- Determine participation in the Session of UNEA.
- Monitor the overall production of documents and the arrangements for the necessary facilities, meeting rooms, sound technicians, hospitality.
- Prepare substantive notes for the Secretary, which will support the conduct of the proceedings of the plenary sessions and those of the various committees.
- Coordinate and provide inputs to UNEA follow-up actions, including highly complex and sensitive policy and programmed issues.
- Analyze and summarize for Secretary of the Governing Bodies, comments, views and other substantive inputs from the Governments on UNEA decisions.
- Responsible for producing the monthly UNEP UPDATE from the Executive Director, which is distributed to Permanent Representatives, Ministers of Environments, UNEP Staff, regional and liaison offices, other relevant UN agencies and non-governmental actors.
- Carry out research, interviews, analysis, writing, editing and monitoring distribution of UNEP UPDATE.
- Coordinate the preparation of briefings for official visits of the Executive Director to various member states of the United Nations; Identify follow-up actions based on the ED’s mission reports and provide inputs to ensure that necessary actions are taken.
- Undertake research on specific issues (environmental, political, institutional).
- Represent the Secretary of the Governing Bodies, in his/her absence at diplomatic functions organized by the CPR and UNEA.
- Coordinate the gathering of information on environmental activities in various countries as well as update of country files.
- Facilitate partnerships with Stakeholders and partners for the implementation of internationally agreed environmental goals.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- Master’s Degree in Political Science or International Relations based preferably on a multi-disciplinary approach (the integration of politics, law, economics, trade, environment, and development) or communications or related field.
- A first level university degree with a combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- At least seven (7) years progressively responsible experience in international relations, liaison with Governments on environmental issues, communication (public affairs, writing) and research.
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
- Fluency in another UN language is desirable.
