World Health Organization (WHO) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Editor in Cairo, Egypt. The duration for the post is of 2 years.
The Editor’s work is to develop the Journal in line with its Mission and Aims by coordinating its production process, in order to ensure that Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal (EMHJ) is the leading public health journal of the Region.
The mission of WHO is to direct and coordinate international health within the United Nations’ system.
Key Jobs Responsibilities
The Editor will perform the following functions-
- Manages editorial aspects of the production process from submitted manuscripts up to acceptable versions for publication in the Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal.
- Edits and proofreads manuscripts and undertakes research and checking of contents, clarifies editorial and technical points with authors and reviewers as appropriate, ensures consistency of text, tables and illustrations and conformity with international standards.
- Collaborates with suitable editors in processing French and Arabic manuscripts and translation of abstracts and titles between the three working languages of the Journal (i.e. English, French and Arabic).
- Prepares the provisional list of contents for each of the 12 annual issues of the Journal.
- Undertakes the technical part of the production process, particularly ensuring consistency of the layout and contents.
- Allocates work to freelance editors, as and when required, supervises and revises their work and advises them on Journal style.
- Undertakes other functions related to the Journal as required by Coordinator / RDI or Director / IER.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- University degree in biomedical / health sciences.
- University degree in Medicine or Master’s Degree in Health Sciences is an asset.
- Expert knowledge of medical terminology, scientific language and editorial processes.
- Demonstrated proofreading skills, excellent grasp of grammar and style.
- Knowledge of current trends in scholarly publishing practices, standards, business models and technologies.
- Strong managerial and organizational skills.
- Sound judgment and proven ability to prioritize multiple deadline-sensitive projects.
- Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically in electronic, written and oral formats.
- At least 5 years’ of combined experience at the national and international levels in peer-reviewed scholarly journals.
- 3 years’ experience in technical editing and managing health related journals.
- Excellent knowledge of English.
- Knowledge of Arabic and French an asset.
