United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Economic Affairs Officer in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Economic Affairs Officer is under the direct supervision of the Chief, Development Policy Section and the overall supervision of the Director, MPDD.
ESCAP is the regional development arm of the United Nations for the Asia-Pacific region.
Key Jobs Responsibilities
The Economic Affairs Officer will perform the following functions-
- Monitors economic and financial developments in the Asia-Pacific region and identifies recurrent and emerging issues of concern to the Asia-Pacific region related to sustainable development.
- Analyses issues pertaining to financing for sustainable development.
- Interprets and applies results of econometric modeling to analysis of economic prospects and policies with particular focus on regional economic cooperation and integration and financing for sustainable development.
- Develops draft policy recommendations pertaining to his/her area of work, with emphasis on issues related to regional economic integration and financing for sustainable development.
- Formulates proposals for sustainable development strategies, policies and measures for presentation to intergovernmental bodies and other meetings.
- Attends international, regional, and national meetings to hold discussions with representatives of other institutions.
- Organizes expert group meetings, seminars, etc. on sustainable development issues.
- Prepares speeches and other inputs for presentations by senior staff.
- Represents ESCAP at international, regional and national meetings.
- Designs and monitors technical cooperation projects.
- Conducts training seminars and workshops for government officials and others.
- Formulates technical modalities for the evaluation of individual technical cooperation projects.
- Supports junior staff by reviewing their work and providing feedback.
- Participates in intra- and inter-Departmental undertakings of broader concern to represent the views or interests of ESCAP.
- Performs other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work unit’s service.
- Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities, both internally and externally.
- Performs other related work as required.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics, monetary and financial economics, international and monetary economics is required. Ph.D. in economics with specialization in monetary or financial economics is desirable.
- A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis or policy formulation in the areas of financing for sustainable development or regional economic and financial integration is required.
- Ability to research in the aforementioned fields as demonstrated through authored and/or co-authored publications is desirable.
- Experience in the above areas in the developing countries of the Asia-Pacific region, is desirable.
- Fluency in English is required. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
- Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
