United Nations University (UNU) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Associate Academic Officer in Bonn, Germany. The duration for the post is of 1 year.
The mission of the UN University is to contribute, through collaborative research and education, to efforts to resolve the pressing global problems of human survival, development and welfare that are the concern of the United Nations, its Peoples and Member States.
Key Jobs Responsibilities
The Associate Academic Officer will perform the following functions-
- Under the guidance of the Section Head, proactively develop and write research funding proposals, and handle project acquisition, developing cooperative frameworks, and networking.
- Actively develop and submit successful funding proposals for research and staff salaries to support all migration-related staff of EMSVA.
- Under the guidance of the Section Head, actively develop and manage a successful research programme on environmental change and human mobility.
- Coordinate, supervise, and provide guidance to research projects in all aspects of the research implementation, including literature review and desk study, preparation of fieldwork, and data collection; post-fieldwork data cleaning, analysis, and reporting (including scientific articles); dissemination activities (including presentations); and facilitate through research findings to move towards action.
- Under the guidance of the Section Head, actively develop new methodological approaches to research environmental change and human mobility.
- Implement a successful research-to-action programme together with the project partners.
- Actively pursue peer review publications and foster team members to publish research findings including, inter alia, legal aspects of climate change through relevant reports, journal publications, book chapters, policy briefs, social media, press, and additional public visibility.
- Actively work to establish a network with potential local, national, and international partners, and ensure public visibility of the Section and Institute.
- Participate in the regular academic duties of the Institute such as:
- Conceive, organize and implement educational and training activities (courses, seminars, lectures).
- Develop teaching and training materials in written and electronic form.
- Advise and supervise students at postgraduate level and participants of continuing professional educational modules.
- Implement educational tasks emanating from the cooperation agreements of UNU with other academic institutions.
- Develop new links/courses with other academic institutions worldwide.
- Perform any other tasks as assigned by the Section Head or Vice Rector/Director of UNU EHS.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- PhD in Social Sciences, Environmental Sciences, International Law or other relevant field with an emphasis on Human Mobility, Disaster Risk Management, Adaptation to Climate Change, Resilience, with a minimum of two (2) years of internationally recognized scientific working experience related to climate impacts, adaptation and mobility.
- Demonstrated skill in use of social science and other relevant scientific methods to research adaptation-related questions (mixed methods approaches).
- Experience using participatory research approaches, qualitative and quantitative research.
- Excellent communication and writing skills with fluency in spoken and written English.
- Proficiency in and a second UN language (which will facilitate fieldwork) is preferable.
- Strong ability to carry out work independently and in an international team.
- Proven background and strong skills in managing projects in multicultural surrounding, preferably related to climate change impacts, resilience, migration scenarios, disaster risk management, and community-based adaptation.
- Knowledge in networking and collaborative projects and research.
- Good team player with strong interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to work in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
- Advanced computer skills (Microsoft Office, etc.).
