Equality Now is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Program Officer Sexual Violence in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Program Officer Sexual Violence works in close partnership with local organizations in sub-Saharan Africa and provides advice to and carries out legal research, litigation activities and administration of projects under the Sexual Violence/Adolescent Girls’ Legal Defense Fund program.
Equality Now’s mission is to achieve legal and systemic change that addresses violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world.
Key Jobs Responsibilities
The Sex Trafficking Program Manager will perform the following functions-
- Conduct legal research.
- Working with partners, identify potential cases of violations of girls’ rights for strategic impact litigation using Equality Now’s criteria for selection of cases and make recommendations as appropriate.
- Identify and work together with local partners, including groups that provide services and have direct access to adolescent girls, on contextually relevant case selection.
- Develop litigation and advocacy strategies with partners and participate in/advise litigation with the goal of setting good precedents for girls’ rights.
- Conduct legal analysis of relevant legal opinions.
- Draft submissions to international human rights bodies.
- Prepare work plans in line with Equality Now’s Sexual Violence/Adolescent Girls Legal Defense Fund strategy with partners and staff.
- Work with partners to ensure that activities are monitored and evaluated as needed.
- Draft actions and letters for review that are in line with program campaigns.
- Identify and raise awareness around the gaps and challenges that prevent or limit girls’ access to justice and work with partners to address these.
- Carry out research in collaboration with partners in relation to campaigns.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- A minimum of an Advanced University degree (Masters or equivalent) in law and the certification to practice law.
- Minimum of three (3) years relevant professional experience.
- Fluency in English required with additional preference for either Swahili or French competency.
- Strong analytical skills and excellent written and oral communication.
- Demonstrated commitment to human rights with a focus on women’s human rights and gender equality and understanding of experiences and needs of adolescent girls; specialization in international human rights law will be an added advantage.
- Ability to work as part of a team and across teams and collaborate respectfully to achieve shared goals.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work under pressure in a multi-cultural environment. Strong organization and planning skills with a drive for results.
- Proven experience building and maintaining networks.
- Experience in monitoring and evaluation is an advantage.
- Willingness and ability to travel.
