Open Society Foundations (OSF) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Legal Officer in Budapest, Hungary or London, UK.
The Legal Officer for Equality and Inclusion will develop and implement initiatives using litigation, legal advocacy, research and/or technical assistance to secure legal remedies for human rights abuses and promote effective enforcement of the rule of law.
The OSF works to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable and open to the participation of all people.
Key Jobs Responsibilities
The Legal Officer will perform the following functions-
- Design and support advocacy campaigns targeted at local or national institutions and governments and regional and international institutions.
- Provide legal advice and knowledge to partners within/outside OSF; evaluate issues and cases for potential involvement.
- Undertake litigation including researching, drafting, and pleading where required.
- Build relationships with civil society partners, affected communities, institutional officials, academics and OSF colleagues working on related issues that advance social change on these issues.
- Organize and conduct training for civil society, institutions and officials on relevant substantive areas, skills and good practice.
- Manage projects that include staff within/outside OSF which may be regional or global in nature.
- Conduct research and analysis, track developments and good practices for use in project materials and in development of strategies.
- Draft and edit reports, briefing notes, blogs, and formal submissions as required.
- Serve as an integral member of the Justice Initiative’s Equality and Inclusion team.
- Undertake administrative tasks to support project activities as described above.
- Significant travel required.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- Law degree or bar membership (or equivalent additional experience).
- 7 -10 years of progressively responsible experience in a situation relevant to the duties of this role is typically required to develop the skills required for this role.
- Fluency (oral and written) in English is a must; facility in other languages is highly desirable.
- Project management skills, including the ability to exercise effective and inclusive leadership and gather evidence and research to inform strategies and activities.
- Strategic planning and implementation skills.
- Ability to interact and develop strong relationships with a wide range of actors from diverse cultural, geographic, economic, political, and social contexts.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to connect with a wide variety of constituencies and colleagues as well as work independently, with a high degree of self-motivation and ability to set and meet goals.
- Ability to work with a decentralized team.
- Ability to draw on lessons-learnt from experience and to innovate.
- Sensitivity to local context and ability to listen effectively.
- Strong networking and convening skills.
- Strong analytical and research skills including familiarity with data analysis.
- Ability to prioritize and make timely decisions.
- Excellent computer skills, proficient in Microsoft Office and experience with internet research.
