Strengthening the capacity of police, health professionals and lawyers to understand and apply the new Penal Code and Domestic Violence Law
The project will promote the rights of women and children by building the capacity of policy, health professionals and lawyers to understand their responsibilities under the new East Timor Penal Code and Domestic Violence Law. Up to 20 doctors, 20 lawyers, 30 nurses and midwives and 30 police officers will undertake training to better understand the implications of domestic violence and their legal responsibilities.

The project will promote the political empowerment of women to participate in local council elections by running capacity-building workshops for women and establishing support centres for women in local councils.

The project will build the capacity of media workers, school social workers, community members and religious leaders to combat violence against women and promote women’s rights through training and meetings, and by establishing legal aid offices for women who experience domestic violence.

Women in Law and Development
Women’s Access to Justice Through Legal Literacy
Empowering women to have access to justice in the Ahanta West District of Western Region, through public education, capacity-building of paralegals, Community Reconciliation Committees, and engagement with state agencies and traditional leaders. Over 2000 people will be reached through radio discussions, posters and community outreach seminars. 25 community members will be trained as legal literacy volunteers.
