The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation provides around UD $230 million annual in grants and low-interest loans to support organizations, individuals and projects in areas of culture, community development, conservation, education, housing, human rights, migration, health, democracy and other areas. It also offers the no-strings attached MacArthur Fellows Programs – an unrestricted fellowship program for talented individuals.
The Foundation actively funds projects and programs in different countries around the world. It announces various national and international funding competitions but in addition to this, fund-seeking NGOs can also submit letter of inquiry to find out if they can submit a proposal for applying for full grants. In fact, the Foundation’s website has a well-established online system to accept funding inquiries and will inform you promptly whether you are eligible to submit grant proposals.
The Foundation does not accept letter of inquiry for all of its funding areas all the time. In fact, the funding cycle procedure followed by the Foundation solicits proposals or letters of inquiry on certain areas during certain times of the year.
During this time of the year, the Foundation is accepting inquiry letters in the following areas:
- Arts & Culture: General Operations
- Arts & Culture: Loan Fund
- Community & Economic Development: Youth Violence Prevention
- Conservation & Sustainable Development
- Human Rights & International Justice
- International Peace & Security
- Media
- Migration
- Policy Research: Fiscal Condition of States & Localities
- Population & Reproductive Health
- Strengthening American Democracy
In this guide, we will only cover those areas of funding which are internationally relevant. For example, the Arts & Culture area of funding of the Foundation is geographically limited to Chicago. While some other areas are open for NGOs across different country to apply.
As a best practice, avoid sending lengthy unsolicited proposals to any donor agency. It is always better to read and carefully follow grantmaking guidelines to improve your chances of raising funds successfully.
