The Swedish International Development Agency’s (SIDA) International Training Programme (ITP) is organizing the training on ‘Strategies for Chemicals Management’. The Part 1 of this training will be held from September 12 to October 4, 2016 in Sundbyberg, Sweden and the Part 2 training in April 24-28, 2017 in one of the participating countries.

Programme Objectives
- The overall (long term) objective is that participating countries will be able to obtain further insight in relations between chemicals management in the supply and use chain, economic growth and improved health and environment quality. The programme should both suit the participants’ needs and contibute to poverty reduction by promoting sustainable use of chemicals.
- The mid-term objective (3-5 years), is that an organisational change should take place or make further development, in which participants use knowledge and tools gained from the programme. In this way, rules, regulations and institutional infrastructure can be developed for improved chemicals management on a national level.
- After each programme, there should be an improvement in the participants’ competence to efficiently work for a well-functioning chemicals management system in their countries.
- The programme is designed to provide participants with knowledge and experiences of the key elements needed forbuilding up an efficient chemicals control system, focusing on preventive measures.
Eligible Countries
- Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Albania, Moldova and Serbia are prioritized.
- China, India, Indonesia, Georgia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo and other countries in the region can also apply.
Course Contents
- An overall perspective of chemicals management is the focus of the programme, including the advantages and disadvantages of different ways of organising roles and responsibilities through legislation. Key elements of preventive chemicals management are covered: legislation, enforcement, chemicals management in practice, data on current situation and trends in use of chemicals, awareness, hazard assessment, exposure assessment, risk assessment and methods for risk management.
- Relations between preventive chemicals control and areas such as pollution control, occupational safety and health, waste management, product development and trade will also be addressed.
Eligibility Criteria (Target Group)
- Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Albania, Moldova and Serbia are prioritised countries.
- Candidates from China, India, Indonesia, Georgia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo and other countries in the region with potential and ambition to develop chemicals management on a national level are also invited to apply.
- The target group primarily includes persons employed by ministries or authorities with a mandate to initiate and run processes of change processes according to the programme’s objectives.
- Candidates should have a relevant university degree in technical or natural sciences, or other relevant university education. Nomination of at least two persons from the institution or country is encouraged.
- The participants are responsible for obtaining all necessary visas and passport validity. As soon as possible after admission to the programme, inquiries should be directed to the respective Embassy of Sweden or other Schengen representation entities.
- The training programme will be organised and conducted in English, without any translation.
