UN Women implements two global grant-making mechanisms – UN Women’s Fund for Gender Equality and the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women.
The Fund for Gender Equality is dedicated to programs that increase women’s economic opportunities and political participation at local and national levels. The Fund provides grants to governments and civil society organizations focusing on two thematic areas: women’s economic and political empowerment. Women’s economic empowerment concentrates on the expansion of women’s equal opportunities to access and control economic resources, including decent work and equal pay. Women’s political empowerment entails the promotion of women’s full and effective political participation and equal opportunities for leadership positions at all levels. In 2013, the fund disbursed $8.8 million to 69 active programs, helping 40,000 women obtain better access to social protection and other public services. In total, since its launch in 2009, the Fund has delivered $56.5 million to 96 programs in 72 countries, reaching over 8 million direct beneficiaries.
The UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women works to stop all of the diverse forms of gender-based violence that undercut women’s rights around the world. It supports innovative, promising approaches to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls, such as: primary prevention strategies to stop violence from occurring in the first place; working with youth, adolescents, men and women; engaging men and boys as partners; enlisting religious and traditional leaders; engaging in public outreach and mass communications; expanding survivor access to support services; securing budgetary and policy commitments for implementation. Since 1996, the UN Trust Fund has awarded US$95 million in grants to 368 initiatives in 135 countries, and currently supports 78 programs in 71 countries and territories with grants totaling $56.8 million.
