One of the best ways to avoid phishing emails is to use an effective spam filter software program in your email system. The spam filter will intelligently filter out all the spam, including the phishing emails automatically to the spam folder (you never have to read them). Since most phishing emails have certain characteristic features like bulk sending, same IP sources, fraudulent email addresses etc, it is easy for the spam filter to identify such emails even before they reach your inbox and filter them out from your relevant emails.
Currently, one of the most advanced and free email systems existing today is Gmail, which also carries state-of-the-art spam filter that automatically distinguishes phishing and spam emails and chucks them out into the spam folder. You can easily start creating your Gmail account, if you don’t have one.
Even if your current email ID is george@example.com (where “example.com” is the web domain of your organization) or even if you are using Yahoo or Hotmail, you can still use Gmail through a simple integration process:
After creating the Gmail account, log in into it and visit the “Settings” at the top right corner. Then in the Settings, visit “Accounts and Import.” Click on “Send mail as” A small window will pop up. Just fill in the details and follow the instructions accordingly. This is to send email from your current email ID through Gmail. If you want to download messages from your current email ID into your Gmail, use the next option “Check mail using POP3.”
Setting these will not only prevent all phishing emails from reaching your inbox, but will also give you a rich interface for your current email address.
